The children enjoy a broad and balanced curriculum that follows the Early Years Framework, however also includes additional, dedicated, timetabled sessions of Woodland Learning Activities, French, Gardening, Music and Performing Arts, as well as Games sessions. In Games sessions children begin learning the basics for sports they will play competitively, such as Hockey, Netball, Football, Tag Rugby, Cricket and Rounders.
Laying strong foundations in the core subjects of English and Mathematics is the key focus. Our children learn to read using The Ruth Miskin, Read Write Inc. scheme, supported by the Oxford Reading Tree Scheme. Using this combination we have experienced tremendous success at OVS and all children make excellent progress. Part of this achievement is due to our dedicated staff team in Nursery and Reception, who read with every child on a daily basis. Many children complete both reading schemes by the end of their Reception year and are enjoying authors such as Roald Dahl as they move on to Year 1.
